Lesson 5:
Chain dimensioning and parallel dimensioning:
As we have seen in the page before, when several dimension lines must be drawn, two different arrangements are possible.
- One after the other in a straight line: this is known as chain dimensioning. This is an example of chain dimensioning:
If chain dimensioning is used, it is very important to draw all the dimension lines exactly at the same distance from the drawing. The following example is not correct:
- One on top of each other, what is known as parallel dimensioning. This is an example of parallel dimensioning:
If you decide to use this kind of dimensioning, remember that the distance between each of the dimension lines must be, more or less, the same (around 5mm).
Both ways of dimensioning are perfect, so you can choose the one you prefer in each case. In fact, you can mix both of them, which is called combined dimensioning. However, if it is possible, it is better to use only one of the two methods.
