Lesson 3:

How can we draw slanted faces?

This is one of the most frequent questions when drawing the views of an object. What does a slanted face look like when viewed from the front? We will now answer this question.

As an example, we are going to draw the views of the following model which has a slanted face on the right:

The first thing we realize when coloring the parts that can be seen from each of the views is that, in this case, we found little triangles and rectangles as well as squares. This is due to the presence of the slanted face.

The second difference is that due to the slanted face now there are parts of the object that can be seen from two different views (side and top views, in this case). Those parts are precisely the ones that belong to the slanted face.

And in the gifs below you can see how each of the views must be represented:

As you can see, the slanted face transforms into a rectangle when seen from one particular view,

Finally, the views of the object are:


In the previous example, we’ve seen how the slanted face was represented as a rectangle. However, sometimes slanted faces that can be seen from two different views transform into a square (not a rectangle) when seen from a particular view. This happens when its height and its width have the same length. Let’s see an example:

In this case, the parts of the model that can be seen from each view are the following:

As it is shown in the gifs, in this case, the slanted face is represented as a square:

So, finally, the views look like this:


Note: a third case exists in which one face can be seen from the three views (front, side and top). The model below is an example of this:
